I truly count it a blessing to work with these precious gifts (and even the not so precious gifts) from God. The excitement at school is so fun!

I've been asked several times this week if Santa was real or if I believe in Santa. I most certainly believe in Santa!!! Santa may come in the form of a child bringing cans of food to school for Salvation Army; Santa may be in the form of someone shopping for a student on an Angel Tree; Santa may be in the form of a child making a special Popsicle stick jewelry box for their Momma. Santa is that special feeling that we have that helps us want to give to others. Hopefully Santa lives in our hearts all year long.

Here are a few sights of Christmas around school. Merry Christmas!

<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-0EHJeAmFRgA/TuJhp7_jQsI/AAAAAAAAALg/tbAymsri9ag/s640/blogger-image--612935590.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Anyway, I'll attempt to catch up a little.

In September, Darren and I went on a fun motorcycle trip with some of our friends. I love the start of a new year in school! I remember as a little girl getting so excited to buy new school supplies. What is it about a new set of unbroken crayons that just puts a smile on my face? I remember laying all of my school supplies out on the floor and arranging them, only to do it again and again until I got them just right! There's nothing like a new Donny Osmond lunchbox to just send chill bumps down a girls' arms either!

And then there were those great new school shoes and clothes. When we would get home from shopping, I would always do a style show for my Dad and he gladly acknowledged my new outfits as he watched one of the three channels that we had on TV.

I guess I've always been a 'school-girl' at heart! It's just such an exciting time of year for me!

Now that I'm a principal, I still get excited about that first day of school outfit! I also love ordering new supplies for the teachers, and believe me, those teachers act like it's Christmas when I deliver new stuff to them. However, probably the thing I love the most about a new school year is the NEW BEGINNING that it brings. All of us get a fresh start. Maybe a teacher and her co-worker didn't get along so well last year...August is a new beginning. Maybe a student had a really rough year and decided that they hated school...August is a new beginning. Maybe a principal was a little hard on a few people in her building...August is a new beginning!

Praise God that He let's us have new beginnings each day, too. Our slates are wiped clean each time we ask for forgiveness...every day is a NEW BEGINNING!

Lord, as we begin a new school year, help me to be wise in my words and actions. Help me to be a light to my students and to show Your love to each person that enters our school. It started on Monday with a flight to Denver, Colorado to see Jarrod. He moved to Denver in February and I had not been to see him yet, so I was really looking forward to seeing his apartment and checking out where he will be living for the next ? years. We flew out of Amarillo and arrived in Denver around 6:30. Jarrod called us after we arrived to inform us that he had to spend the night in Colorado Springs that night so he wouldn't get to see us. Although we were disappointed, we knew that this would be a very busy week for him since Blue Bell was just started to sell ice cream in Colorado this week. We actually got to see him for about 5 minutes that night as he was driving through Denver. He was taking the media truck to Colo Springs so we stopped and gave him a quick hug before he hit the road again.
The next morning, we headed off to Golden Colorado. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-37lzVwevFqc/TYk2rEY7CPI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/9WuvwYb9LS4/s320/DSC_0360.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5587056926270359794" />
This was a neat little town with lots of history. As we were walking through the little town, we came upon this sign in the window of an ice cream store. We had to take a picture! Sure enough, we sent it to Jarrod and he said that is one of the shops he sold to. We talked to the sweet lady inside and she gave us lots of compliments on Jarrod. That always makes a momma proud!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZC2NFl3Jqgw/TYk4Lm8g_eI/AAAAAAAAAIY/t45pZz1Lhto/s320/DSC_0361.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5587058584813895138" />

That day, we also drove up to the top of Pikes Peak. It was a beautiful car ride and when we got to the top (14, 100 ft.) it was 18 degrees! It was at the top of Pikes Peak where the lady wrote "America the Beautiful". It was obvious when you looked out that she was inspired by the "purple mountains majesty above the fruited plains". God sure is a wonderful creator!!!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WRyUdj2uGp8/TYk6zgz6NBI/AAAAAAAAAIw/XBKFRyJydI0/s320/DSC_0372.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5587061469385208850" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mh8tXzi8tJ0/TYk6zQZlZtI/AAAAAAAAAIo/-kNq7vqwVjQ/s320/DSC_0371.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5587061464979826386" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZxQjZzkxeD0/TYk6zOqYCsI/AAAAAAAAAIg/izmpw3zl_bo/s320/DSC_0366.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5587061464513383106" />

After our trip to Pikes Peak, we headed over to Colorado Springs to spend the night. We got to have dinner with Jarrod at a great steak place and then headed back to the hotel. Jarrod had to be up by 5:30 am so he wasn't too interested in staying up late to visit.

The next day, Darren and I drove over to Cripple Creek. This is a fun mining town that is now full of casinos. It is a fun place to spend a couple of hours. I won $50 in black jack, but Darren lost $50 so we had a fun morning that didn't really cost us anything. After that, we headed back over to Colorado Springs to do a little shopping ( I had to get decorations for Jarrod's apartment). After shopping, we headed back to Jarrod's apartment where I completed the decorating (I wish I would've taken pictures, but I forgot). His apartment looks much more homey with things on the wall. Later that afternoon, we met up with my brother and his family. We decided to go to a hamburger restaurant that we saw on "Man vs Food". <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-L8g3Gmz2psk/TYk8oHwCVkI/AAAAAAAAAJA/v40FsXZF2TY/s320/Cospers%2Band%2BVickie.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5587063472702772802" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IG03oEQvRJc/TYk8lqeZiRI/AAAAAAAAAI4/2iCm9Wi2fgg/s320/Cherry%2BCricket.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5587063430484429074" />

Jarrod was able to meet up with us for dinner so we got to see him for another couple of hours.

We had a great time in Denver and I must say how proud I am of Jarrod. He is working so hard and absolutely LOVES his job. It is great to see your kids happy in what they have chosen to do. Now I am praying for him to find a wonderful, Christian girl for him to date and a church for him to get involved. I know that God already has these things planned - I just have to be patient!

Over the weekend, we were able to fly to Abilene to see Nathan and Alyson. They have bought a new house so we had to go peek inside to see what they are getting. I'm so proud of them and although they wouldn't let me take a picture (Nathan said I might jinx the sale), I can't wait to help them move in after closing on April 18. What a difference a year makes for that sweet little couple! They have added Scout and a new house - so proud of them! Pictures to come when Nathan lets me.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7D-ZbE1d50Y/TYk_CFPkr1I/AAAAAAAAAJg/mw-8av2lxLE/s320/flying%2Bto%2BAbilene.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5587066117729595218" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Z-Q4splkI2U/TYk_BzJKf6I/AAAAAAAAAJY/3GVCqBo94Qc/s320/clouds.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5587066112870875042" />

Overall, this was an awesome spring break and I LOVED getting some time for rest and relaxation! Darren and I found ourselves doing just that. We wouldn't watch tv together or eat dinner together. It seems we were just so comfortable with each other that we didn't make an effort to be together. About 3 weeks ago, we had a long talk about becoming more intentional in our relationship. I told him that i wanted to be treated like his "girlfriend" and I must say, things have improved at our house. Now, don't get me wrong...I'm in love with my hubby and have always felt so blessed to be his bride, but I just felt like we were drifting.
We got the book called "Love Dare" and are trying to put the devotion into practice. Each day you are given a challenge. Day One was to refrain from any negative comment. I think in marriage, we sometimes need to learn to bite our tongue. Sometimes we are meaner to the person we love the most than anyone else in the world. Day Two is to not only refrain from negative comments, but to show kindness in an unexpected way. Day Three was to purchase something that made the other know you were thinking of them (I bought him a Sonic lime diet coke). That is as far as we have gotten, but we plan to continue. It will take us MUCH longer than 40 days to finish the book, but at least we have started it....
One of the things that we have decided to do (I decided, he agreed) is to have 2 date nights per month. These date nights don't have to be expensive, but you have to put some thought into them and the other person can't complain. I told Darren that if I planned a date to the opera, he couldn't complain. He said, "Good thing you don't like the opera!" Ha! He got off the hook when he said he would plan our first date night - a trip to Las Vegas. He had planned that trip months ago for the Super Bowl, but I still let him off the hook. I had to plan the next date night.
On Friday night, Feb. 18, we headed to Amarillo to stay at the Adaberry Inn. Nathan and Alyson had given us a gift certificate when they got married and so we used it for our special date. This is a great bed and breakfast and was a special treat for us. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HHdsD4dAvCI/TWGfMr7SoUI/AAAAAAAAAH4/9okdT2OLggM/s320/adaberrry%2Binn.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575912853960040770" />
We had dinner at a great restaurant called Macaroni Joes. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 99px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_2eSBIVqBeI/TWGhJCBRlXI/AAAAAAAAAII/aquFT_LNxhw/s320/macaroni.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575914990194496882" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 97px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4kn1Ge_8fn4/TWGg5K1cQXI/AAAAAAAAAIA/FqAvapNhOOo/s320/macaroni%2Bjoes.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575914717682876786" />

After dinner, we tried to find a place to listen to live music, but ended up back at the bed and breakfast for a pretty early bedtime. The next morning, we had a great breakfast with a sweet, young couple who were headed to Africa to become missionaries. We left the B&B, shopped a little, had a late lunch and then headed home.
Darren and I are both trying to be more intentional in our relationship. I pray that the next 26 years of our marriage gets better and better. I love that man!

Thankful Heart

Today is the Sunday after Thanksgiving! What a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend it has been! I have so many blessings in my life and I hope that I never take one of them for granted.
We left on Thursday morning to go to Abilene to join Nathan & Alyson, my folks, Darren's dad and Jarrod. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving meal together. I was so impressed that Alyson, at such a young age, was willing to pull together a meal for Thanksgiving. I would've never been able to do that at 24 years old! She is a wonderful cook and such an awesome hostess. Nathan had to work all weekend to get ready for the playoff game, but we enjoyed seeing him while we could. It was wonderful to share time with our parents as well. Mom and Dad had been at a camp near Abilene so they brought their motor home. I'm glad Billy went with us, too. It's hard to believe that Jean has been gone for 2 Thanksgivings already. Jarrod wasn't able to join us until Friday afternoon. He had to work at the bank Friday morning so he waited until he got off work to come over to Abilene. On Friday, the girls shopped a lot and the guys watched football...a lot! On Saturday, ACU played Central Missouri so we all went to the game. It was a wonderful game, but in the end, we came out on the wrong side 55-41.
Some of the things I'm most thankful for:
1. My family. I love being married to a guy who keeps things so interesting. Darren is the love of my life and he always puts up with me through good times and bad. My two boys are incredible men and I'm so proud of them. My beautiful daughter-in-law is a blessing from above. My parents have been there for me since the day I was born (literally)! I love them to pieces. My father-in-law is so special to me as well. I'm glad he gave me the greatest gift in the world...my hubby! My siblings and my brothers and sisters-in-law round out my family along with my nephews, nieces, great nephew and nieces and my wonderful Aunts and cousins make me a very blessed woman!
2. My home. There's no place like home! That is a very true statement. Years ago, I remember that I always felt like my parent's home was still my "home", but things have changed in the last few years. Now my home is my home. I love the warmth of walking into my home, the beauty that surrounds me, the memories of raising a family here.
3. My job. I'm thankful that I truly enjoy going to work each day (well, almost every day). I love the women that I get to work with, the families that I see each day and the students that I get to love on each day. It's the kids that make me so incredibly happy. They bless my life each and every day.
4. My friends. Whether I see my friends once a week or once a year, I'm thankful that I have a few people that I can call on and they would be there for me in a heartbeat. You know who you are! I love that I can laugh with you, cry with you, share my secrets with you....thank you for being there for me!
5. My Lord. I'm thankful that I love a God that loves me more! I'm thankful that I gave my life to him when I was 10 years old and He'll always be there for me! I pray for our church that we will find a new pastor to lead us to live a life that brings us closer to God.
There are so many things that make my life so wonderful, but it is truly the people in my life that make me feel so blessed. If you are reading this, you are special to me because you have touched my life in one way or another. Thank you for being part of who I am!
Give thanks with a grateful heart!
Vickie

Summer Vacation

I love summer! Don't get me wrong...I love my job and enjoy the life that I live during the school year. However, there is something so nice about going to bed when I want, waking up when I want, laying around the house, tidying up my house, spending time with my hubby, enjoying the sunshine, etc. I LOVE SUMMER!
So far, I have cleaned out my closet and tried to organize my drawers in the bathroom. It is so easy to just throw things in an empty spot until I have time to get it all organized. It seems like, however, that as soon as I get the house clean, I look up and it is messy all over again. Oh well, that just means that we feel comfortable at home and that I have family here with me. If it was clean, it would only mean that I live by myself and I certainly don't want that either! Other than a little cleaning, I haven't done much of anything yet...and I love it! I think this is the beginning of the greatest summer EVER!

Nathan & Alyson's wedding

What a marvelous day to witness the marriage of our son, Nathan, to an incredible woman, Alyson! I don't think I can put my feelings into words, but I will do the best I can...

The weekend started on Thursday when Jarrod and I drove to San Antonio together. Darren had to stay behind in Plainview for an extra day and work. We hated to leave town without him, but we had so much stuff packed in the car, I'm not sure where he would've sat anyway. It was wonderful to spend 8 hours with Jarrod and talk about his plans for the future. He wrote his wedding toast on the way and we laughed and talked all the way down there. When we arrived in San Antonio, we checked into our hotel, the Sheraton Gunter in downtown San Antonio. It was a beautiful, historic hotel that is supposedly haunted in one of the rooms. (Thank goodness that ghost didn't show up in my room!) My aunt from Minnesota flew in and as soon as she got settled in, we left to go to the David's house where Nathan & Alyson were. I could sense a little stress in the house...the wedding worries were already beginning. We had dinner with them and then headed back to the hotel for the night. Nathan & Jarrod came to my hotel room and we just layed on the bed and chatted together. It was a fun mother/son (s) moment! Soon after, Vick, Denise, Curt, Micah and Grandad arrived and then it was time for bed. I had planned to sleep late, but of course, I had too much on my mind to sleep. I got up and had my morning prayer time and just asked God to bless the weekend and especially to help Nathan & Alyson enjoy every second of the day.
At noon on Friday, we headed to Alyson's bridal luncheon. It was in a wonderful restaurant called "Los Patios" and was a lovely setting for a great event. I could tell right away that Alyson was relaxed and enjoying every second. At the luncheon, one of Alyson's aunts asked us to write our favorite scripture reference on a blue, satin ribbon. Then they were going to take the blue ribbon and tack it under Alyson's wedding dress. This way, she would be surrounded by scripture on her wedding day. I thought that was such a neat idea.
After the luncheon, we headed to Main Street Ballroom where the reception was going to be held. Maggie, the wedding coordinator, was there getting everything ready. Things were really beginning to come together. Darren flew in on Friday morning and he met up with his brother, Donny and KayLyn who had flown in from North Carolina. My brother, Ken and his daughter, Abbey, also flew in from Colorado. At that point, everyone had arrived and we were so excited! From there, we went to decorate for the rehearsal dinner at Casa Rio. The room is already so beautiful so I didn't have to do much, but I had made placemats that had puzzles all about Nathan & Alyson. I also decorated one table with purple and silver (ACU Rocks!) and had to get the power point set up. Then it was time to get showered and ready for the rehearsal. The night was absolutely wonderful! The rehearsal went very smooth, especially considering that there were so many attendants. The dinner was amazing and I think, for the first time, I really saw the maturity level of Nathan. He and Alyson were so poised and gracious in all that they said and did at the rehearsal dinner. My heart just swelled with pride at the two of them.
After rehearsal, we headed back to the hotel where we were greeted by all of our Plainview friends who came for our special weekend. We are so thankful and blessed that so many people drove (or flew) all the way to San Antonio to share this weekend with us.
The big day arrived! I was never nervous, just excited. We had our hair and makeup done and headed to the church around noon. As we were riding to the church, I thought, wow!, this is the last time that I'll ever ride in a car with my son before he takes a wife. It's the little things that make you stop and think about how significant everything is.
The first time I saw Alyson, I literally was speechless! She was the most beautiful bride that I had ever seen! Nathan is such a lucky fellow! Before we knew it, it was 3:00 pm and time for it all to begin. The most beautiful part of the entire wedding was the look on Nathan's face when he saw Alyson. They did not see each other before the wedding so when those church doors came open, Nathan was mesmerized by Alyson's beauty. His little chin started quivering and tears began rolling down his face. It was the sweetest moment of all times. My boys have such a sweet heart like their daddy's. I'm so glad that they are tender-hearted. The pastor did an amazing job and reminded Nathan that he should remember 6 words that will make him have a happier marriage: I'm wrong, I'm sorry, Forgive me. Pretty good advice.... Jarrod sang a wonderful song.."I will be here" by Steven Curtis Chapman. The wedding turned out perfect and the bride and groom were so happy.
The reception was amazing! The food, decorations, music, ice sculpture, cake, chocolate fountain, coffee bar, candy bar, etc., was just incredible. All of the attendants had a great time and we couldn't have asked for a better event. Before we knew it, it was time to see the bride and groom off on their honeymoon. They were whisked away in a limousine and it was all over.
We heard from Nathan and Alyson yesterday after they arrived in Mexico. They emailed us and said that the resort was AWESOME and they were having a blast! I can't wait to hear all about it!
Overall, it was the greatest weekend! We are so blessed to have a wonderful daughter in law who loves our son so much. We love Alyson's parents and plan to get together with them as much as possible. I thank God for such love from family and friends!

Jarrod's College Graduation

What happened to the last four years? In fact, what happened to the last 22 years? It is just super hard to believe that Jarrod is already finished with college and ready to enter the world of being a real grown-up.

Over the years, Jarrod and I have grown so close. He and I have a wonderful relationship and one that I pray will continue through the rest of his life. He has brought so much joy and laughter to my world. Yesterday at ACU graduation, I had the privilege of escorting him. At ACU, they have a tradition where the graduates, wearing black robes, are escorted by someone special to them, wearing white robes. During the ceremony, the escort "hoods" the graduate and then the graduate will walk across the stage to accept their diploma. It was a wonderful honor for Darren when Nathan asked him to be his escort and it was a wonderful honor for me when Jarrod asked me to escort him.

As I was sitting in Moody Coliseum yesterday during graduation, I began to think of all of the love that was in that room. Each student had someone there who had encouraged him/her along the way. There were audience members that were whooping and hollering for each of the graduates as they walked across the stage. When the graduates returned to their seats, their escort was there to high five them or give them a pat on the back or a squeeze. I hope those graduates realize how much love was there for them that day. I know as a 22 year old, I probably didn't appreciate my family as much as I do now. We just tend to take each other for granted. Jarrod was a fortunate young man as he had lots of people to cheer him on. Of course, his Dad and I were there. He also had my parents, Darren's dad, Aunt Denise, Nathan & Alyson and his girlfriend, Bri. Bri's grandparents also came to cheer him on. I hope he realizes how lucky he is that he has so much support in his life.

After graduation, the processional led us outside where there were signs posted all over the "mall" for family members to meet us at. It reminded me of when he was in kindergarten and was told to go stand at a certain spot after school until his momma came to pick him up. In just a snap of the fingers, we have gone from kindergarten graduation to college graduation. It seems so impossible.

Now that Jarrod has graduated, I want him to know a couple of things:

1. Always keep your faith. God has brought you to it and now He'll bring you through it. No matter what else happens in life, remember that God loves you more than even your momma does and he has your whole life planned. Jeremiah 29:11.

2. Remember where you came from. You will never be too old or too big to come home and cry with your mom and dad, laugh with us, share your secrets with us or celebrate your joys with us. We will always be your #1 fans!

3. Remember who you are. Don't let the world tell you who you are, you tell the world. You have a wonderful personality, a great sense of humor and a terrific head on your shoulders. Don't let discouragement and frustration take any of this away from you. You will be faced with disappointments in life, but you will come out of it on the better side because of who you are and Who's you are!

4. Remember love! Your dad and I love you so much and am so proud of who you are. In the end, love is what is most important. Love your God, love your family....

5. Success is only measured in the eyes of God.

Congrats, Jarrod! We are so proud of you!

My day with Nathan

Today was a very special day in my life and one that I'll always cherish. It was my last day with Nathan, all by myself, before he becomes a married man. After he got engaged, I asked him if I could have one day with him when we could just spend a special day between us. Today was that day...

Our first stop of the day was Men's Wearhouse where he was fitted for his tuxedo. I know that I will cry when I see him in his tuxedo - he is going to make a very handsome groom. After that, we headed out to go shopping for some honeymoon clothes. He had a few specific things that he was looking for. As he was in the dressing room trying on some clothes, it brought back lots of old memories. When Nathan was a little boy, he loved to dress up. When he was about 3, he was getting ready for a birthday party and when he came out of his room, he had on a coat, tie and dress pants. He always loved to dress up. Today, when he came out of the dressing room, I asked myself, "Where did the time go?" How did 25 years get here so quickly? I don't know if it was just coincidence or what, but I saw so many little boys today that reminded me of my two sons. I guess I am just feeling all nostalgic or something...

I'm so proud of Nathan and the man that he has become. He is such a good guy and he is proof that good guys DON'T finish last. He is going to be a wonderful husband and father. If he is half as good of a husband as he has been a son, Alyson is going to be a very lucky wife. I feel so blessed to call him my son and I pray that our relationship continues to be strong for the rest of our lives.

When we hugged each other as we were ending our special day, I got very teary. Nathan asked me what was wrong and I just said, "I'm so happy for you!" I know that my relationship with Nathan will change after he marries. After all, it should. He told me that things wouldn't change, but I know they will. I feel like I'm losing my son (in a good way), but I know things will never be the same. I'm not letting him go, but I'm loosening up my grip. I cried all the way home - not because of any other reason than how excited I am for Nathan! Alyson is a wonderful woman and I'm so excited that she is going to be my daughter-in-law. I have prayed for my two son's wives since the day they were born. I know that God blessed our family with Alyson.

One month from today, my baby boy will take a bride and I will never again be the most important woman in his life. I'm ready to step aside, but I pray that he always knows how much he is loved by his momma.

Second Row

Years ago I had a child,

In another place and time.

The greatest thing about this child:

He was completely mine.

I held him to my breast so close,

He filled me so with love.

He made me know without a doubt,

He was a gift from up above.

Through the years I've watched him grow,

And at times I'd lend a hand,

Til now this beautiful gift from God

Has turned into a man.

For years I was the only woman

In this young man's life,

For, you see, I was his mother,

And he hadn't taken a wife.

Then I saw a lonely look

That crept into his eyes,

There was a place I could not fill

No matter how I tried.

So I prayed God send another

Into this young man's life,

That very special person

That he would call his wife.

Then he met another

That set his heart aglow.

And I left my place of honor

For a seat in the second row.

For God answered this mother's prayer

And sent him the very best,

Of all the women on this earth

He chose Alyson over the rest.

So I'll thank God for Alyson every day,

And I'll love her the best I can.

For being the wife God has chosen

For my little boy, who's now a man.

Thunderstorms

Tonight, there is a storm outside. It's funny how I'm not the least bit nervous. I think it is because we have no crops in the ground and I know nothing will be ruined by a little rain or hail tonight. Isn't it weird how I'm enjoying the sound of lightning and raindrops tonight, but if this same storm came around the middle of May, I would have totally different feelings!

Sometimes, I wish Darren was in a different profession....one that didn't depend on the weather to make or break your profits. Just wishing....

It's been awhile...

I'm determined to keep up with this blog. It is either that my life is too busy to take time to post or that my life is so boring that there is nothing to post!
Well, let's see....life hasn't been boring lately. I went to Houston a couple of weeks ago to NAESP (National Association of Elementary School Principals) conference. I had a great time with all of my principal friends and got to spend a little time with my sister, too.
This last weekend, Darren and I went to Dallas to the NASCAR races. We left Friday after school and drove through rain all the way to Denton. We went to the races Saturday morning, but they were cancelled because of the rain. I called my friend, Debbie, and we met her, Bill, Tye, Ashley, Parker and Josh for dinner. It was wonderful to catch up with one of my dearest friends! On Sunday, it continued to rain, so the races were cancelled again. We went to the movie, Darren got measured for his tux and we just hung out at the hotel. It was great to just spend time together doing absolutely nothing! Monday morning, we headed out to the race track again and they finally had the race! It was lots of fun! #11 won. I had purchased a hat with #11 on it the day before - not because I knew who the driver was, but because that is Darren's number on his race car. Plus, I liked the pink hat with bling-bling numbers. Anyway, #11 ended up winning so I looked like I really knew something about racing!
If I had all the money in the world, I would just travel with my hubby. We could follow the NASCAR circuit (Darren's dream, not mine) and then go to every state in the good ole' USA! I think about how life would be so much less stressful if I didn't have to think about work. Don't get me wrong - I absolutely love my job, but it was hard to go back today and face all of the decisions and stresses of the day.

Another thing on my mind is Jarrod's job hunt. He had two interviews last week, but hasn't heard back from them yet. I have been praying for God's will. I trust that God already has all of this planned out for Jarrod. I just wish He would let us in on His plan. As a mom, I've always wanted things to be just right for my kids. I usually could fix whatever was bothering them. This, however, cannot be fixed by my mothering skills. Yes, I could call the companies and give them HIGH recommendations for Jarrod, but somehow, I don't think they would listen or appreciate my words of wisdom. All I can do at this point is hand it over to God and trust that all will take place in His time.

There are less than 28 days of school left. What happened to this year? Time certainly flies when you are having fun. I feel so thankful for a job that I love!

I hope all of you have blessings pouring over you and that you have someone to love. I love you all!

I got a tattoo!

Did the title of that blog get your attention? Well, I haven't had a mid-life crisis - yet, but I am now a tattooed woman. Actually, I got permanent eye liner put on so I think it qualifies as a tattoo. That's a pretty boring tattoo, but a tattoo nonetheless. I was really nervous about getting this done because I don't do pain. I was shaking by the time I layed down on the table and the "tattoo artist" put the numbing cream on my eyes. I had to lay down with my eyes closed for about 20 minutes so that the cream could do it's trick. That, in itself, drove me crazy. Then the procedure started. I can't even begin to tell you the torture that I went through. It was not painful in the least, but it was the most horrible torture that I've ever endured. In fact, I think if the military needs a new way to interrogate prisoners, they should do this to them because at one point, I would've confessed any sin to make her stop. One friend described it as a "deep tickle" but I don't have the words to describe it. It was just uncomfortable and I'll never do it again....I'd better not say never because maybe it is like child-birth...after a few months you forget the pain and are ready to do it again. Anyway, I survived and I think I'll be very glad that I did it. She did a magnificent job and I love the way my eyes look.

The rest of the weekend was so fun! The kids were home and we had great food, great fun and a wonderful time of fellowship at church. Mom and Dad also joined us for a few meals and our time in worship.

<img style="WIDTH: 320px;

Our church service was beautiful and my favorite part was when we sang the following song:

Thank you for the cross, Lord

Thank you for the price you paid

Bearing all my sin and shame

In love you came

And gave amazing grace.

Thank you for this love, Lord

Thank you for your nail pierced hands

Washed me in your cleaning flow

Now all I know

Your forgiveness and embrace.

I never realized how much it meant to my parents until I had college kids of my own.

Today I went to the grocery store and spent more than I normally would spend in a whole month! Of course, I had to buy Easter goodies. Darren thinks I'm nuts, but I still give the kids an Easter surprise. I LOVE IT WHEN MY KIDS COME HOME! Nathan & Alyson will be here tomorrow after Alyson finishes a test. She is still in nursing school and has to study so much. On Saturday morning, I am getting permanent eye liner done and Alyson is going to go with me for moral support. Darren and Nathan are going to try to go golfing if the wind isn't blowing...ha! Like the wind won't be blowing.....
Saturday afternoon, Jarrod and his girlfriend, Bri, will come down. I LOVE IT WHEN MY KIDS COME HOME! Mom and Dad will be here Saturday afternoon, also, as they are working at the camp in Floydada.

I've got meals planned, groceries bought and Easter treats ready. Tomorrow, I will spend my day cleaning and cooking. I LOVE IT WHEN MY KIDS COME HOME!

As Christians, Easter is such a special holiday. This is the holiday of hope! Because our Savior rose from the grave, we get to serve a loving, LIVING God! That is awesome!!! I'm looking forward to sharing our church service with my family.

Hope you enjoy your weekend!

Weight loss contest

Since Nathan is getting married in May, my side of the family decided to do a weight loss contest that ends the day before the wedding. Actually, it was my brother's idea. He decided to go running after Christmas and he was so humiliated because he had to stop and rest. He said he had never felt so fat and out of shape. So he challenged us to "Cosper's Biggest Losers" contest. We all committed to $50. We didn't have to weigh in front of anyone; we just had to go on the honor system (mistake #1). Anyway, we are doing the biggest percentage of weight loss and we will determine the winner when we all get together in San Antonio for the wedding. The participants are Mom, Dad, Jay, Pam, J.W., Ken, Darren, Vickie, Nathan & Jarrod. The winner will make $500. I've been on and off of so many diets in my life and you can tell by my size that none of them have been too successful. Maybe I shouldn't blame it on the diet, but on the dieter!
Darren and I decided low carb was the "weigh" to go so we were very motivated for about 2 weeks. Darren dropped about 10 lbs pretty quickly and I lost about 4. We totally blew it during spring break! After that, however, I've been pretty good and I think I've lost a total of 10 lbs. I've got LOTS more to go. Baby steps, Vickie....
Why is weight such an issue with so many of us? I know we should be blessed that we live in a country where food is plentiful and I do feel blessed, but I just wish I had more will power. Chips and hot sauce are not my friends anymore, but I certainly do miss them! It is hard to do without sugar and flour, too, but chips are my downfall.
I'll keep you posted on our progress. Wish me luck! $500 could buy me some cute new clothes in a smaller size!

I'm so thankful!

Have you ever had one of those days when you just feel thankful? One of those days when you look back over your life and wonder why you are so blessed? I'm having one of those days today.

First of all, I'm thankful for my salvation. It doesn't matter what I do or what I say or how far I get away from my faith, my God is always there waiting for me to come back to Him with open arms. I'm thankful that I'm a believer and there is absolutely NOTHING that will take away my salvation! Thank you, Lord!

Next, I'm so thankful for my family. I'm thankful that I was raised by wonderful parents who taught me morals and values. I'm thankful that they have shown me how to love unconditionally. I'm thankful that I grew up in a small town where everyone knew who you were.

I'm so thankful for my husband, Darren. I'm thankful that he still makes my heart go pitter-patter and can send chills all over me with his kiss! I'm thankful that he is my best friend on this earth and I can tell him absolutely anything and he loves me anyway. I'm thankful that we were put in the same class at Tech 26 years ago and that his sexy legs still turn me on! I'm thankful that I can count on my hubby to provide for me and that he is a respected man in our community.

I'm so thankful for my oldest son. Nathan is such a blessing to me! He is a magnificent human being and I'm so thankful that I got to be his mom. I'm thankful that he loves the Lord and is serving Him by coaching young men at ACU. I know that God called Nathan to show these boys who God is.

I'm thankful for my baby boy, Jarrod. I'm so thankful that Jarrod is such a hard worker and has such a sweet spirit about him. I'm thankful that he has promised to be a "momma's boy" forever! I'm so proud that he will graduate in May from ACU.

I'm thankful for my future daughter-in-law, Alyson. I'm so thankful that you love Nathan with all your heart. I'm thankful that you bring some estrogen to a family that is full of testosterone! I'm so glad that we are friends and that we talk on the phone, text message or facebook each other. Welcome to our family!

I'm very thankful for my extended family: my brother and sister and their families. I don't know what I would do without those phone conversations with my sister! I love my nieces and nephews like they are my own kids! And I'm thankful that my brother in law and sister in law love my brother and sister!

I'm thankful for my in-laws. I love my father-in-law for showing all of us how much he loves us. I'm thankful that he and my mother-in-law raised such an awesome son to be my husband. I am thankful for my brother-in-law and sister-in-law in North Carolina because even though we don't see you much, we just pick up where we left off when we do see you. I'm thankful for my other brother-in-law and sister-in-law (who I look like - according to everyone) and their children. We've had lots of good times together and I'm thankful for those!

I'm thankful for girlfriends who make me laugh! I'm thankful for a job that I love and for awesome co-workers! I'm thankful for a beautiful home and a reliable car! I'm thankful for good health! I'm thankful that I have plenty to eat (I'm on a diet right now so I've obviously had more than plenty to eat over the years!) and for plenty of clothes to wear! I'm thankful for puppy dogs that are so glad to see me drive up at the end of the day! I'm thankful for little kids who love to learn and I'm thankful for little kids who don't like learning at all!

I have many more things to be thankful for. How about I just keep adding to this list as time goes along? I think that if I stay in an attitude of thankfulness, then the little things that come up in my life won't matter.

The Lord's Day

We had a wonderful sermon at church today. As our pastor prayed this morning, he prayed that "something unscheduled" would happen. I really thought about that. Our churches are very scheduled - what songs to sing, how long the sermon would last, how long the invitation should be. Wouldn't it be great if something unscheduled really happened? Like what if we kept singing a song because we felt the Spirit move? Or what if the preacher decided at the last minute to preach a different sermon? I wonder how often we hold God back from doing amazing things because of our schedules?
After church, we waited around for Darren's dad and his friend to join us for lunch. Then we came home and took a much needed nap. Awwww.....I probably won't be able to sleep tonight, but it sure felt good this afternoon.

A good day!

Today was a great day, other than the wind. Why does the wind have to blow so much in good ole West Texas?
I started the day by hostessing a bridal shower for one of Jarrod's friends. It is hard to believe that these guys are old enough to get married, but then I look back and I was a couple of years younger than they are when I got married.
After the shower, Darren and I headed to Lubbock to take my car to the shop (for the 3rd time). I sure hope they got it fixed this time. We had lunch at one of my favorite Mexican food places and I didn't eat one chip! That is awesome for me! After lunch, I had to get a few things at the mall (I found my shoes for the wedding!!!) and then we went to the movie. I love my hubby! He is so good to me!

Hello once again!

I had forgotten that I had ever started a blog for our family. I just happened to run across this page as I was looking at another friend's blog. I'm really going to try to start journaling on this because I'm at the age where my mind is beginning to forget very easily (that sounds better than "I'm getting old and forgetful!"). This will be like a diary of sorts...now if I can just remember how to blog???

A lot has changed in our family since my last post in 2008. Our biggest news is the engagement of Nathan and Alyson. They were engaged in the fall of 09. We are absolutely thrilled with Nathan's choice for his life-partner and we cannot wait until May 22. 2010.

Alyson's parents and us, along with lots of Nathan & Alyson's friends, met the newly engaged couple after he proposed. It was a fun time to show off the ring and talk about wedding plans.

The Plainview shower for Nathan & Alyson was incredible. 21 very special friends were hostesses to the shower. I was humbled at the generosity of this small community of people who so graciously gave to my kids. These two will have a beautiful home and will have a well-stocked kitchen for their new home.

We were able to go to San Antonio for the shower hosted by Alyson's parent's friends and it was equally as nice as their Plainview shower. After the shower, we ate at Casa Rio - the restaurant where we will have their rehearsal dinner. We are definitely on the countdown to the wedding and we are so excited. This is an all star game that showcases players from Division II schools from all over the nation. The NFL scouts were there all week to evaluate the players. On Thursday night, there was a banquet for the players and their families. Nathan was announced as one of 8 national finalists for Lineman of the Year. Although he didn't receive the award, it was an honor to be included in the top 8 in the Nation. The game on Friday was disappointing as our team lost 42-13. Nathan's girlfriend, Alyson and her friend, Abbie, drove down for the banquet. Four other friends drove down for the ballgame on Friday.

2008

HAPPY NEW YEAR! He had to stay in Abilene to rehab his knee (he had surgery the Friday after his last football game). Him and Baylor - my granddog - will be here until Dec. 31. Jarrod gets to stay a while longer, although he has a ski trip planned right after the first of the year.

We enjoyed our Christmas with the boys. It is amazing that I was the one who kept asking if we could open presents this year. This was the first time that they didn't wake up at 3:00 am to see what Santa brought. Does that mean they are growing up? I sure hope not!

We went to Darren's sister's house on December 24-25. We had a wonderful time with the entire Young crew. We enjoyed the Christmas Eve service in Farwell and had a great time with lots of food, fun and fellowship.

We went to my parent's house on the 28th. We celebrated Christmas, along with my parent's 50th wedding anniversary and Nathan's graduation. We had a great time with all 18 of us (including Nathan's new girlfriend, Alyson).

We are looking forward to a wonderful 2008. Happy New Year to all of you!!!

Darren & Vickie

We are enjoying our empty nest more than we ever thought we would! We have enjoyed getting re-aquainted with each other over the last year and half. We have followed the Wildcats all over the place and are not quite sure what we will do next year when we don't have a football team to watch every weekend. We have watched our boys play some kind of sport since they were 3 years old. This will be the first time in 19 years that we don't get to do that.

We like to ride our motorcycle and hang out with our friends. We were fortunate enough to see Mt. Rushmore in November when we went to Nebraska to watch the Cats. It was a breathtaking sight. We are planning a cruise to Alaska this summer with my entire family to help my parents celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

Nathan

Nathan graduated Magna Cum Laude from ACU with a degree in Bio Chemistry on December 14. He is planning to return to ACU in the spring to begin working on his Master's Degree. He will be a graduate assistant coach and plans to stay at the college level to coach once he receives his master's degree.

Nathan had a wonderful year in football and was given many post season honors. He was voted Lone Star Conference Offensive Lineman of the Year (for the 2nd year in a row). He also made 1st team Academic All American and 1st team All American. He was invited to play in the Cactus Bowl, an all star game that will be held in Kingsville on January 11. He has made the final 8 for the Gene Upshaw Award - an award given to the top offensive or defensive lineman in the Nation. This award will be handed out at the Cactus Bowl Banquet. We are so proud of Nathan and know that God has awesome things in store for him!

ACU Football

What an awesome year for the WILDCATS!!!
